Submission #14

Submission #14 was made by the lovely Mia, a 10 year old vegan and craftivism from the UK!

Mia says she is vegan for non-human animals, "because...everyone has rights and animals don't deserve to be killed." She chose to take part in this project, "because [she] loves crafts and wants others to know how good it is to be vegan!"

Keeping the Hens Warm!

Fellow crocheters/knitters, I just wanted to introduce you to two lucky ex-battery hens adopted by a friend of mine. I say lucky because they are lucky not to have the same fate as the majority of hens used for eggs that never get to a safe and happy home.

My friend adopts rescued hens each year if she has the space. These ladies, and about 4 others that will be arriving in the winter, are the reason that I am currently making hen sweaters. Making something to help keep them warm while they recuperate is craftivism. Part of the idea of craftvism is to reach out and help an individual through craft. It may not make a difference to the millions of hens living awful lives in farms, but it does make a difference to these individual lives.

I hope you will reach out to any friends that rescue non-human animals and ask if they may need a hand. You would be surprised just how much support you can give just by donating through the simple act of creating. If anyone would like to lend me a hand making sweaters, then let me know.

Here's the pattern in case you come across a rescuer or sanctuary that could use some sweaters for their hens:

Submission #13

Lucky #13 is all the way from the UK by Amanda J.!

Amanda says, "I chose to take part because I love crafting and am vegan. I recently found out about craftivism and thought it was a great idea to promote messages in a non-threatening way."

She adds, "my design says "Animals are friends not food" as I believe it is wrong to eat and cause pain to animals for human greed. Many people say they "love" animals yet continue to eat them. I am sending the message that if you really love animals, then you wouldn't eat them."

Twelve Strong!

First, my sincere apologies for being so quiet the last few months! My Little One became mobile, so my free time disappeared pretty quickly. Happily, he is starting to take longer naps now, haha

I just wanted to show you all how amazing all the banners look together. I hope I'll one day be able to show you what 100 look like together, but for now, we are twelve strong :)

If you are new to the project, welcome!

I started this project to help claim back the term "vegan" from plant-based dieters and to give vegans and non-humans a voice in the craftivist movement. I truly believe there is room for both humans and non-humans. We can control how our choices affect both with every purchase and daily decision we make. We can speak up through craft to help create a conversation and reflection on "why vegan."

If you would like to join in and send a banner,
send me a message or click here for the how to!

If you are new to the craft world, no worries! We have had submissions from all skill levels and welcome all banners. If you need materials, I can send you a free kit by post. Everyone that sends in a banner, receives an awesome "I'm a vegan craftivist" sticker, FYI :D
